Amazement at the Love God
Bestowed on Us to Set Us Free from Sin ~ I John 3:1-24 |
DAY 16—What kind of love God has given us? |
Volumes might be written on the three verses we take for today. Some Gospel song writer—believed by some to have used the walls of his prison cell as a place to write—has summed them up well: Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the sky of parchment made; were every stalk on earth a quill and every man a scribe by trade; to write the Love of God above would drain the ocean dry, nor could the scroll contain the whole though stretched from sky to sky.
I John 3:1-3—Behold (idéte, an exclamation, “Look! See!”), what manner of Love the Father hath bestowed upon us (has given to us), that we should be called *the sons (tekńa, children, those born into the family) of God: therefore the world (ho kósmos, the secular order) knoweth us not, because it knew Him not (Being born into His family, the world doesn’t know us because it didn’t know Him). Beloved, now are we the sons (tekńa, children—There is no article before tekńa. The emphasis simply is that we are children born into the family) of God, and it doth not yet appear (and it has not yet been made manifest) what we shall be: but we know (oída, we know for a certainty) that, when He shall appear (that whenever it is that He might be made manifest), we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as (kathos’, just as) He is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
DEAR FATHER, I cannot begin to understand the kind of Love You show toward me. When I think of what kind of person I was when You saved me, it blows my mind to consider that You could ever have loved me. And when I think of how I’ve acted since You saved me, it is even more amazing that You still love me. Please settle me in Your Love. Make me a vessel through whom Your Love will flow on to others. Here now are some people I have not shown much love—and they really need to know Your Love. Help me be genuine in demonstrating Your Love to them and please let them begin seeing it in me!
